Marriage Can Be Tough

If you’re married, I believe that being a good husband/wife is central to being a good leader.  If you can’t influence those that you’re with the most, then it’s difficult to influence those that you’re around only 40 hours per week.  However, being a good husband/wife can be one of the toughest things in the world.  Your spouse sees you at your best and your worst.  Your spouse has the power to affect all areas of your life with their words and actions like no one else.  Your spouse can either bless the work that you do or they can make it profoundly more difficult than it is on its own.

My wife, Consuela, and I had the privilege of speaking at the Full Life Conference at First Assembly Community Ministries back in October.  We are able to speak on marriage because we’ve been through some stuff.  We are now in a position where we can begin to tell our story of God’s redemptive hand of grace in our marriage as well as the amazing forgiveness and reconciliation that has happened for us.  Marriage ministry is a passion for Consuela and me and we love to help couples who find themselves in a position where they need some help and encouragement.

At the Full Life Conference, I was asked to close the session out with a prayer.  And, I wanted to pass that prayer along to you and I hope that it will bless you and your marriage.  It is based off of the Scriptures found at Numbers 6:24-26.

May God make His face to shine upon you:

When the weight of your “I DO” feels more like “THERE’S NO WAY I CAN”

When the “For Better or For Worse” feels far more “worse” than it ever feels “better”

When “for richer” is the option for everyone else and yours is only “for poorer”

When “sickness” is far more common in your house than “health”

May the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace:

So that your marriage can be known for words like “love and cherish”

So that “til death do us part” means a happy ending…together

So that “from this day forward” starts today and starts with you

Now go:

And love, in spite of how you feel

Forgive, even when it seems too hard

Talk, even though you don’t have the words to say

Serve, even when they don’t deserve it

Bless, even when you’re on empty

Because those are the kind of God-honoring things that lead to a life-long ‘Happily Ever After'”
